Blade of Grass

At first, I didn't see the little boy who I had given the bag to last week, so my mind began to think about what to say. I thought about Saturday, Janette and I had done some much needed weeding in the flower beds around the house. I began to formulate a short message on that.

I got up to the front with the kids, and the little boy was sitting on the far side of the pew. He handed me the bag, and it felt like it was empty. I reached inside, and felt nothing. Then I looked, at the bottom of the bag was a single blade of grass. So I ended up talking about weeding and cutting the grass.

Grass grows and we have to mow it. But if you wait too long in between mowings, it can really be a pain to cut it, and it takes a lot longer, especially if you have an old, worn out lawn mower. Our lives are the same way. We have to constantly be "mowing the grass" of sin in our lives. We can't make an exception and say, "well just this once it's ok" it has to be a daily refusal to give in, because if we give in just once, it's that much easier to let it go the next time. And before you know it your yard is over grown, and you haven't touched the lawn mower of your Bible and prayer in a month.

Sometimes grass grows where we don't want it, we will refer to this as weeds. Again, I let the weeding go for way too long and it was a pain to do now, it still isn't done. But with weeding, you have to pull out the whole weed, roots and all. If you just break it off at the base of the stem, you've stopped it for a moment, but it'll come back. All you've done is make it look better for the time being.

It's the same with sin, we have to get to the root of it, and pull it out. It can't be something that we just break off the visible part, all we're doing then is covering it up so that it looks good for the rest of the world to see. We don't deal with the issue if we don't pull the roots out.

If we let it go, then it takes time to pull all of the weeds. Janette and I got about half of it done Saturday, soon we'll pull the rest. Weeding the sin of our lives is a process. It won't be done over night, but with the help of Jesus, we can pull all of the roots out, and have a life that is beautiful flower garden that glorifies the Gardener, Jesus Christ.

Peace be with you
