Bible Verse

Sometimes I think the kids miss the point of the Bag. The object is to find random items and bring them in. This week I was handed a Bible verse written on a piece of paper. There was a lot going on yesterday and I honestly can't even remember the verse, it was out of Colossians.

2 Timothy 3.16-17 says, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."

Psalm 119.105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Psalm 119.11 says, "Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You."

The Bible is the written Word of God. It is a guide to us, but more than that, it is a love letter from God's heart to ours. It is God showing us who He is, and what He is like on pages that we can read and study over and over. It gives us instructions for life, it is a guide to the life that God desires for all of us to live. But it also is a tool that we are to use in the war we are in.

Ephesians 6.13-17, "Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Hebrews 4.12 states, "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

The Word is a sword. It is a book of the truths of God, the truths that the Church is to proclaim and support (1 Timothy 3). It is the truth that will convict the world and show them the path to life.

Recently I've been convicted with the need to memorize more Scripture. For a while in college I was doing really well, but as life has happened I've slacked in that area a bit. Part of my plan is to have the whole church memorize one verse a week that captures the main theme of the message. We need to memorize Scripture, not only will it help us not to sin against God, but each verse is sword to use in combat against Satan. Collect as many as you can, and keep them sharp. Review your verses, because a dull sword is nowhere near as effective in combat as a sharp one.

Peace be with you
