Today I get to share the verses that I picked out for one of the sons I hope to have.
Proverbs 3.1-4, "My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man."
If my wife and I are blessed with two sons, this will be the verse for the second one. His name (first and middle) would mean "Remembered by God, mighty leader". If he lives by the things my wife and I teach him, if he lives with truth and kindness, and lets them be written on his heart, God will remember Him, and he will be a mighty leader. He will have favor and a good reputation in the sight of God and men.
Ever since I read Wild at Heart I've thought a lot about the naming of children. That's why I've searched for names with meaning, names that will give my sons an identity of mighty warriors before God. The verses that I've searched for declare them as my sons, and they reinforce the meaning of the names they have been given.
Pen's are to write things, to record our thoughts, to share our feelings, to recall promises and responsibilities. Parents, and especially fathers and men, have the responsibility to teach our children the things of God, to help them write them on their hearts. It is our responsibility to build up our children, both sons and daughters, into the warriors and princesses they are in the sight of God.
A pen can be used to write a name, an identity. Parents play a huge role in the identity their children carry into adulthood. What identity are you giving to yours? Is it the identity of a warrior of God to your son? Of a princess, the daughter of the King of Kings, to your little girl? What identity will you write on their hearts, until they can write their own?
Peace be with you
